Video Consumption – Where is it now, and where is it going?

As a marketer, it’s important for you to stay up to date with the current trends.

Video is one of the most effective ways to grab consumer attention online, and done correctly, you can even get potential customers to seek out your video content.

Understanding how video is being consumed in today’s digital world can help you make better strategic decisions.

To help you with your video marketing strategies, this article will give you current snapshot of where video consumption is and where it’s expected to in the near future.

America loves streaming

Currently, 57% of Americans are subscribed to at least one video streaming service. This amounts to 147.5 million U.S. Netflix subscribers, 88.7 million Prime Video users, and 55 million Hulu subscribers.

Streaming is clearly becoming the method of choice for video consumption. However, 65% of U.S. consumers pay for a traditional TV subscription. There’s clearly a lot of overlap as well – 47% of U.S. consumers actually pay for both traditional TV and at least one internet streaming service.

Not only that, but it’s likely that if someone is subscribed to one streaming service, they’re also subscribed to another. Consumers that pay for video streaming services are, on average, subscribed to three different services.

In any case, it’s clear that video streaming is growing rapidly.

YouTube is in the lead

Sure, Netflix and Hulu are great, but YouTube is still leading the way in internet video consumption.

Currently, 192 million U.S. consumers are on YouTube – mostly for free, but some paid. This is great news for marketers who are looking to run a video ad campaign.

According to Google themselves, the top 4 categories on YouTube are entertainment/pop culture, comedy, music, and “how-to” videos!

This is great news for small businesses or brands looking to leverage video as a part of their content marketing strategy!

Traditional cable is on its way out

By now, you’re probably clear on the fact that video is moving to the internet.

What’s not exactly as clear-cut is how quickly it’s happening. Today, there are 33 million cord-cutters in the United States. By 2022, this number is expected to grow to 55 million.

For video advertisers, this means TV advertising will soon be replaced with its digital counterpart.

Most streaming is done on a TV – not a mobile device

Mobile devices are responsible for over 50% of internet traffic. This means that 50% of video consumption is on a mobile device, right?

Nope! In fact, 70% of all video streaming happens on a TV, while only an estimated 15-20% happens on a mobile device.

So when planning your video advertising or content marketing strategy, be sure to consider the fact that viewers may be sitting on their couch rather than at their desk.

YouTube Hits 1 Billion Hours Watched Every Day

I am a sucker for YouTube. It is extremely easy to get ‘stuck’ watching video after video, and I fall for it all too often!

YouTube just announced in a blog post on Monday that they have hit a new record – 1 billion hours worth of video watched EVERY DAY on their platform! Let’s stop and think about that for a minute. 1 billion hours worth of video watched every single day. That would take over 114,000 years for one person to sit and watch non-stop.

This goes to show the popularity among consumers for video. According to HubSpot, during 2017, video will account for 74% of all web traffic.

Brands need to understand the importance and popularity of video. If video is not part of your routine content marketing strategy, it needs be to. Or else you will fall behind others who have it.

Shoot me a note below if you would like help learning how to build it into your content strategy.

Should I have video on my website?

Below is my latest article, posted on sulastudios.com.

——

It is amazing to watch how quickly technological and social advances change our culture. It was not too long ago when having a website and being on social media were the “things to do” to succeed online.

As we shared in a recent blog post, the attention span of the average adult is only 8.25 seconds! This is evident in how people now spend the majority of their time – quickly scrolling over images in their Instagram feed, swiping through FlipBoard, and turning to their phone during TV commercials.

We are visual. For most, we prefer images, infographics and of course video over reading long paragraphs of text. We want our information, and we want it quickly.

And I don’t blame anyone.

This is why social media platforms have made large shifts in their focus, giving higher priority to images and video content.

This is also why video is growing in popularity on websites. In our recent blog post, Why 2017 is the Year for Video Marketing, we shared that websites that contain video have on average an extra dwell time of 2+ minutes!
[tweetthis]Websites that contain video have on average an extra dwell time of 2+ minutes![/tweetthis]
Think about that for a moment. If the average dwell time on your website is currently 1.5 minutes, adding videos may boost that up to 3.5 minutes or more!

The reason for the growth is simple. People are more willing to watch a short video describing your product, service or even company culture than they are to read long sections of text. This does not mean that text is not important – it is. However, what is more important is a balance of both video and text.

We would love the opportunity to help you brainstorm the best use of video for any of your digital efforts. Just shoot us a quick note at hello@sulastudios.com. We would love to treat you to coffee and strategize about the best methods to help you reach your goals.

The Power of Training Videos

Below is my latest article, posted on sulastudios.com.

——

As businesses and brands begin to grow, it can become overwhelming to keep up!

You are hiring new employees.
You are launching new products.
You are improving communication to your customers.

All of this requires a lot of work! And, often, it requires the same work over and over.

Most of this repetitive work can be reduced to practically nothing by introducing training videos into your workflow!

Do you notice your customer support is routinely answering the same questions over and over, whether on the phone or by email, to your client base? This confusion can be due to a lack of information that can be easily at your customer’s fingertips. Consider adding training videos to help your customers understand how to use your product or service more smoothly.

Even better, be proactive. As you are considering adding a new product to your shelf, create training videos that help your prospective customers understand the features of that new product and how it will impact their lives. These videos can help increase your sales!

Lastly, any growing team knows the pain of new employee training and training your current team on new systems, processes, or policies that are put in place. Training videos are the prescription to eliminate this pain! Training videos will help you streamline new employee onboarding, and provide a seamless avenue to train your existing team on new information they need.

Below are a couple of training videos Sula Studios put together to help Ecotality reduce some of the same tensions discussed above.

Are you experiencing any of the above pain points? If so, we would love to help you as well!

Whether you know exactly what you need, or you want help brainstorming the best options for you, let us know. We would love to connect on the phone, over email or in person to build the perfect solutions for you!

Vimeo, YouTube or Facebook?

Below is my latest article, posted on sulastudios.com.

——

There are many platforms available to post your video to, and it can be overwhelming to know which one is the best for your application.

We are here to help.

The quick answer – all of them.

Each of these three platforms, YouTube / Vimeo / Facebook, have benefits over the other platforms, and by posting your video to each of them, you are getting the combined results of all of them working together.

Let’s break them down.

Vimeo.com

Vimeo is a powerful and very professional platform. It is a great avenue to host your videos on, especially if you are sending proofs for others to view, or embedding videos into your website. They have very robust tools to allow easy integration into your current site and allow you the ability to brand / customize the viewing experience for your users.

It has detailed analytics built in to allow you to track information about your viewers.

The downside to Vimeo is that there are additional fees for the professional levels of the software.

Vimeo, YouTube or Facebook?

YouTube.com

YouTube is currently the second most searched search engine that exists, right behind Google. Interestingly, they are also owned by Google, which means there is a seamless integration of your videos appearing in search results on Google.

Due to the large traffic that YouTube receives, posting your videos to YouTube opens the door for incredible potential, allowing for millions of users to potentially find your videos organically.

YouTube has powerful search algorithms built in, and constantly shows recommended videos next to the current video they are watching. These recommendations are built on previous videos they have viewed and search terms they have entered in the past.

Due to these recommends, the average mobile viewer on YouTube spends 40 minutes watching videos, often because their attention is captured from recommended videos.

With YouTube, it is easily possible for your videos to get thousands of views from people who have never heard of you before, all based off of their searches.

Vimeo, YouTube or Facebook?

Facebook.com

Facebook is currently the largest social platform that exists, with 1.13 billion active users daily. At the same time, Facebook boasts they receive 8 billion video views on average every day. In recent years, Facebook has put tremendous energy and focus towards videos and has seen video take off among users.

Posting your video to Facebook increases your social reach, and puts it in front of the eyes of your followers on Facebook. Due to the focus on video at Facebook, Facebook places your videos in front of your followers more than photo or text posts. According to Facebook, video posts get an average 135% greater organic reach than posts that contain just a photo.

Vimeo, YouTube or Facebook?

By posting your videos to each of these platforms, you get the professionalism of Vimeo, the organic traffic from YouTube, and the increased social reach on your Facebook page. Together, you are getting the best impact of your video, which in return boosts your brand visibility and sales.

If you have any questions regarding these platforms, I would love to help. Shoot me an email at justin@sulastudios.com, and I would love to connect and help you through this journey.
