Book Review: All Marketers Are Liars by Seth Godin

All Marketers Are Liars by Seth GodinI just finished reading another book by Seth Godin. All Marketers are Liars. It was a great book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to sell a product or service.

The book dives into the reality of how marketing works, how marketers have used it to their advantage, and the true value behind being authentic with your marketing.

The reality is this: All marketers tell stories. The stories may or may not be true, BUT those stories impact the consumers buying decisions EVERY DAY. If your story is NOT true, and the truth eventually comes out, it will greatly impact your brand’s reputation. Now, some brand’s false stories will never be proven false, and that is sadly the truth.

This is the power of a story. A story shapes a belief about a brand. With an authentic story, you can literally change the world. A story can also penetrate a worldview, and once that happens, people in that worldview will share your brand with others.

The sad thing is that most brand’s do not think in terms of story. They think in terms of push marketing – how do we drive more interactions with our brands by pushing ourselves on them. Yet, they are unknowingly telling stories along the way, but probably not the stories they want to be telling.

Seth covered a lot in this short book. Grab your copy today and let me know what you think!

The Real Storyteller.

Storyteller.
Easily coined as someone who tells stories.
Fiction or nonfiction. It doesn’t matter.
The storyteller is there to entertain – to keep the listeners attention.

Yet, storytellers are the new marketers.

We have seen a large shift recently. The traditional ‘push’ marketing no longer works. We cannot shove our brands and products in front of people and expect them to buy. We abused that avenue, and now consumers have the ability to ignore us. To skip the ads. To look past the signs. To pick what they want to see at every given moment.

It is no longer about the product.

We must give buyers a reason to buy our product. We must be transparent. We must show how we can help them.

We must truly tell our story.

The real storyteller? You.

What is your reputation?

Whether you will accept it or not, every brand has one – a reputation.

Your reputation is a valuable asset, or it can be a huge turnoff. It all depends on how well you care for your reputation. Is it something you think about, or do you just brush it off?

Truth is, that should be one of the largest concerns of any company. The best form of marketing is Word of Mouth Marketing. What your customers say to their friends and family, who then talk to their friends and family, is your reputation. It spreads. And fast.

A bad experience.
A poor attitude.
A broken product.
A messed up drink.
People dont forget. In fact – they share.

So what are you doing to improve your reputation? How are you treating your customers differently than everyone else?

Stand out. Be different. Put that strong memory in your client’s minds that they will share with their networks and bring you future customers.

Word of Mouth Marketing is the best form of marketing – because it does the work itself. Take advantage of it. Use it.

You won’t regret it.

We All Have One

This past week, I had the opportunity to travel down to Ball State University and speak on a marketing panel with Scott Feather and 3 other panelists.  Loved it.  It was a great time sharing about my experiences and engaging in deep marketing discussions with fellow professionals.

One of the questions that was asked to the panel was this, “What is one thing you recommend to a new-to-the-market college graduate?”  During this point in the conversation, I began thinking about brand.

My answer was this, “Think about your personal brand.  Think about what you want your personal brand to be.  Think about the future and what you want to be known for and what reputation you want to carry.  Then do what you have to do to accomplish that – even if it requires some major life changes now.”

Personal brand. We all have one. The question is  – what is yours?

And – is that the one that you want?
